Sepia Saturday: The Boomers

This photograph was taken in a small studio or booth at the Alabama State Fair in Birmingham, October 1951. That is my sister Carol Sue on the left with her pale strawberry blond hair, adorable freckles, and of course, her cowboy hat. Yep, you got it, I am the baby sister. This is the only baby picture I have ever seen of myself. We had an older brother and sister, born before WWII. I believe my mother must have had her hands full. At this time, my father was on active duty for the Korean War and was stationed at Mountain Home, Idaho. All five of us had just returned from the first train trip across the country and back to visit him. God bless her; my mom still had enough energy to take us all to the fair! Amazing!

A beautiful photo and marvellous that your Mother juggled you all on to a train for the visit to your Father!

Lovely photo, you were a beautiful baby. Your mother must have been quite a lady to take four youngsters on a long train journey and then still find enough energy to take you to the Fair!

Well, if it's the only one you have of yourself, it's a great one! You look positively cherubic and your sister is a sweetheart!
God bless your mom, indeed!

It is amazing the things mothers will do for their families.

Hi FireLight,

So cute! Your Mom was obviously a determined lady. I had to take another look at your sister's photo towards the bottom of your sidebar. She liked her hats!

Miss Willow, I am always smiling whenever I see you have been here!

Maggie's Garden (K), yes it is a treasure to me especially because I am with my sister.

Eric S., she absolutely had to have a cowboy hat...all the time!
Thank you for stopping by!

Alaine, sadly I have no photos from the actual train trip, but I am considering digging up some history on the trains of the era and using those with the family lore on those journeys. There are several really hilarious incidents.

Rowan, yes my mom was a mover and shaker, and had those trips been set in our current era..she would be the mom with all the photo gadgets available! I do have in my memory all the stories she would recount about our adventures on the rails!

Kat, my sister Sue was a huge fan of Roy Rogers & Dale Evans & Trigger--all things Western--and anything to do with horses! I was always right behind her, dragging a doll or a teddy bear!

Foxglove Spires, indeed it is. A mother is just another word for a marvel!

Derrick, did you notice that I finally spelled December correctly? The story behind that school picture was that my mother naturally went to a lot of trouble to get Sue's hair just right for "picture day" only to have her smuggle the hat to school in her book satchel! The last time I saw her, she was wearing a hat. She was in the hospital; it was Easter Sunday, and she had asked me to bring her an Easter bonnet! And so I did!

You were an adorable baby! Isn't it funny, first and sometimes second children are photographed a lot. By the time you get to the third...not so much. But i agree, if there's one photo to have it's this one.

What an adorable photo! Your smile's still the same. It's nice that if you have only one photo of yourself as a baby, you have one as cute as this!

It is indeed a great photograph - and two smiles that seem almost the same. Radiant, both of them.
